
Winston Rodney also known as Burning Spear is a Jamaican Reggae singer and musician. He is a Rastafarian and he is one of the most influential and long standing roots artist to emerge in the 1970s. He was born on March 1st 1945.
He was born in Saint Ann’s Bay in Jamaica, when he was young he listened to R&B, Soul and Jazz music it was transmitted by the US Radio station whose Broadcasts reached Jamaica. When Rodney was a young man he was influence
d by views of political activist Marcus Garvey especially with regard to the exploration of the themes of pan-Africanism and self-determination.
Burning spear was originally the Rodney’s Group it was named after a military award given by Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of an independent Kenya, and including bass singer Rupert Willington.
